With Joanne Walker, C.E. Muphy has created a character with one of the most honest voices in any genre I've come across. Having faithfully read every installment of The Walker Papers, I feel as though I've come to know this character intimately, and through her adventures, watched her learn and grow as a person and Shaman. This is C.E.Murphy's greatest gift to her readers; a fully realized protagonist who is flawed as most of us are, but her boundless courage, her humor, and increasing self-awareness makes her admirable and likeable. I won't recap the storyline but a great deal is revealed that explains why Joanne is the woman I have come to know through these books. I found this to be probably the most accessible of all her books, though I've enjoyed every one,of them immensely. While I'm saddened that only one book remains in the series, I look forward to seeing how Ms Murphy sends Joanne off into the world.

Michael and pulls out some surprises of his own. Shown that he is a feelings and thoughts about things that not only did Jo not know but, until then, didn't know himself. A little difficult moving a romance forward and save the world from Darkness. Give me a minute and I can ramble for an hour. "Mountain Echoes" continues the evolution of Jo's use of her Gifts. I love Good defeating evil but don't have it happen too soon.
One of my fave Walker paper novels yet! The master is back, and going after those that will hurt Joanne most. Ancient history revisited, in more ways than one, humor, Good vs. Evil, . Love, magic, and chitty chitty bang bang? Find out for yourself ;)
It felt a tad rushed at times, especially in light of the long drawn out courtship between Morrison and our protagonist Joanne. The relationship with her mother was given a whole book to unfurl itself. The relationship with her father, her son, ex-frienemy Sara, and a bunch of others she knew on the Rez are stuffed into this book. Also don't forget the Master. And there's more time traveling. The big payoff is that Morrison and Joanne are finally together. I look forward to reading the final book.
This will be a series I will really miss. As I've loaned out all my paperbacks, I'm going to have to buy replacements for my s as I know that eventually I'm going to go back & re-read the entire series one after the other.

As to this book, the action is intense & well planned. I like learning more about the character's back-story and there was plenty of that here. I don't buy the romanticized view of the Native American, but from what I remember of the history I studied way-back-when, this is all pretty factual. Granted, I did not verify anything and my memory is full of holes.

With that said, it was a very enjoyable read and one that I found hard to put down.
Fans of the Joanne Walker shaman series should enjoy this new addition as it continues the adventure from the point where the last book left off a call while she was in Ireland telling her to come home and help locate her father, who has gone missing. Joanne finally returns to the reservation to meet her son and find her father. One element in these books that appealed to me was the lower body count. Unfortunately that seems to be changing in the series, as there are a few more victims of the bad guys in this book than I recall from the earlier books in the series...even though Joanne was a homicide detective in the earlier books. I missed Gary in this one, but Joanne still had a sidekick in this latest adventure, so no complaints. If you've been reading the series, you won't want to miss this latest adventure, and if you haven't read any of the books in the series yet, you should give it a try by reading the first one, "Urban Shaman" and discovering what happens when a down-to-earth mechanic for the police finds out she has magical powers, whether she wants them or not.
Mountain Echoes follows Jo as she returns "home" to North Carolina on the heels of her adventures in Ireland. She reconnects with her father, high school friends (acquaintances? enemies?), and her son. As in each of the novels as we move forward, Jo is more in control of her power and herself than the last time we met. The battle against the "Master" continues, here, with a new type of attack. We have a lot more time travel and things start to make sense as the time lines come together. I wasn't a fan of No Dominion, but reading it before Mountain Echoes will make a big difference as you move through the last two books in this series. Overall, I thought this novel was stronger than the previous two in the series. There is a lot more action in this novel than in the early books and a lot more involvement with those not in the know when it comes to magic, etc.
As a practicing shaman, I find that the suspension of disbelief required to truly enjoy "The Walker Papers" is more and more of a stretch. I also don't care. Ms Murphy always takes the reader on a wild and worthwhile ride, and"Mountain Echoes" is no exception. Here, we begin with Joanne Walker's harried and hurried return from Ireland to her Cherokee birthplace and the source of much of her inner rage.
While I loved Murphy's previous delving into Walker's Celtic heritage, and I was wary of now jumping into Cherokee lore, I enjoyed this book immensely. We get great insight into Walker's early years, the sources of her anger and shame, and we see great character growth as Joanne begins to gain an adult perspective on her own adolescent misperceptions of her time in the Qualla. In short, she grows up - a lot.
"Mountain Echoes" gives the reader but few moments to catch her/his breath between action scenes. Along with Murphy's penchant for thorough background research and taking liberties for the sake of the story, so too does she take great liberties with shamanic realities and the laws of physics.
However, it just doesn't matter because she makes it work! This is great story-telling that has the reader hanging on every word and turning pages as fast as possible.
I give this book a very high recommendation with one caveat to fully appreciate and understand all that goes on, start at the beginning with "Urban Shaman" and go from there. You won't regret it.
