The Essentials of Street Photography edition by James Maher Dave Beckerman Arts Photography eBooks

I found out about this book through TWiP (photography podcast) and immediately wanted to check it out. I was unsure about the purchase but it's been worth every penny. I'm not a street photographer in particular as I live in Fort Wayne, Indiana and I find it hard to really focus on this kind of photography in a place like this where not too many things happen.
This book has given a whole new perspective on street photography, with a whole interview with a street photographer based out of a small town in Oregon. If you are like me, and live in a moderately to sparsely populated area, this book is for you: it will encourage you to pursue street photography in a different but no less exciting way.
The Essentials of Street Photography will also teach you about technique, equipment, etc. It will not go out recommending expensive gear or anything, so that's also a big plus for those in a budget.
And last, but not least; I had a technical concern about the book before purchasing so I decided to contact the photographer. To my surprise, he responded very promptly and has been beyond helpful. His availability and involvement are outstanding. Very thankful for that.
Great and easy read. Will not disappoint.

The Essentials of Street Photography edition by James Maher Dave Beckerman Arts Photography eBooks Reviews

Well written and generously illustrated, this street photography eBook for on iPhone was a fantastic purchase. It was instructive and inspiring, particularly for anyone who is new too street shooting. And even the most experienced of "streetogs" can find great advice in the interviews with luminaries for brilliant photographers like Jay Maisel. This book is seriously under priced! Highly recommended!
...I was hoping for compelling street photography images that exemplified the material discussed. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the insightful interviews more. The aforementioned give a perspective of how nuanced, and based on personality, photography can be; in this case, how a photographer's view of the world functions as a filter through how he approaches the execution of and final editing of his work. The tips at end of the book are spot on, especially the one on overcoming fear. I can victoriously claim a strategy all the vein presented helped me early on.

Personally, I wish James Maher would had addressed the issues of empathy and respect more in this book. If you are going to shoot people, you really need to care about people. Many folks doing street have no concern for the people they photograph which eventually shows; they are just out to make a name for themselves, if they can. Just because you have the right to do something doesn't mean it's the correct thing to do. Yes, subjective and debatable but food for thought for you aspiring street togs.

This book is primarily for beginners attracted to street photography; however, more experienced street togs will come away with some keen guidance. I like that the author wrote nothing in stone I am so sick and tired of the "20 Rules" and so forth of what is and isn't street photography, and the interviews will confirm this for you. I came away with much to meditate on in spite of doing street photography for several years. Some of my street work has been sold, exhibited, and used in several types of mediums from magazines, textbooks, book covers, and publicity, across the globe. I call it more documentary than street. For me street refers to where the type of documenting is going on. Yes, it comes down to capturing life where and when it's happening.
For me it was interesting reading. Interviews and suggestion for exercises are well worth to think of. The book is not technical.
The book indeed covers most topics you need to know about, but rarely goes in-depth on the topic itself. If you already photograph, this book should be skipped. If you’re new you should buy a book that goes further than scratching the service.

Watch some YouTube video’s or read blogs of people like Eric Kim and you’ll learn faster and more efficient.
Lots of pointers and advice on doing street photography. Conversations with actual photographers give many useful ideas. Well written and great for anyone interested in street photography.
I have been a portrait photographer for many years and have always been interested in shooting on the street but have never really done so. I was looking for a good place start understanding street photography and this book clearly is it. The first part of the book helps you understand the concepts and the technical aspects. The second section provides some great interviews with street photographers with very different ways of approaching the topic. The final section of exercises is good at pushing you out onto the street to try it out for yourself. If you're interested in trying out photography on the street, you will get enough technical information and some starting ideas that will provide a good starting point.
I'm relatively new to street photography but have enjoyed photography as a hobby for more than 30 years. This book showed some great examples of some of the best in street photography and have triggered some creative ideas for me. The book has interviews with what I consider to be some of the top photographers in the field. When reading the book some of the ideas struck me as something I had no interest in trying but then later another photographer would give you his idea on the subject and I thought "now that I can see me doing". Photography techniques vary as widely as the personalities of the people that practice photography. Reading the different interviews really brings home the different paths you can take to get to the final print. While I don't want to shoot from the hip, or grab a super quick snapshot as I walk by, because it makes me feel I just got lucky, I can't argue with some of the results that people get using these techniques. Great read, very inspirational and well worth your time.
