Father May Be an Elephant and Mother Only a Small Basket But Gogu Shyamala 9788189059514 Books
This set of short stories details the Dalit woman's perspective of struggles in Indian villages. Although I hate to use the cliche, I did truly get the feeling of reading RK Narayan's works. There is a clear rustic quality throughout the book that can't but please one. Especially when it feels so authentic. Some of the stories are pure fun, especially "Trace It", some seem mundane and almost preachy "The village tank's lament". "Jambava's lineage" is brilliant but "Why shouldn't a baindla woman ask for her land?" obscure and pointless. I loved the quirkiness of " Tatki wins again" and "A beauteous light", but was left unmoved by "obstacle race" and "Ellamma is distressed". It was almost as if there is something elusive about the stories that don't seem to quite capture the point. You are left feeling like there was something in the original that did not get carried over in the translation. Reading the notes section about Gogu Shyamala's world it is clear that the original is, well, original. The language she uses is supposedly a dialect of Telugu that is rich in dalit culture, but the translations are very pedantic. I am not sure how one can bring out beauty of a language in a translation, but this work certainly does not. If despite that the stories have a strong impact, how much better must the original be. So if you can read telugu, I suggest you buy the original, but if not, perhaps one should just wait for a better translation.Tags : Father May Be an Elephant and Mother Only a Small Basket, But...
