I read quite a bit, of many different genres, but paranormal is one of my favorites. Follow that up with contemporary romance. So, when an author is able to successfully blend the two as is done here, this makes me a very happy reader. I also enjoy reading stories that include locations that I have visited before because it brings back memories. I happen to have lived in Northern California for many years when I was younger, so know Lake Tahoe quite well and was happy to go back there with the characters in this book.

Sapphire Ridge is the story of a woman, Niki Lusk, who is looking to get over the heartbreaking loss of her fiance by finding closure in the resort town of Lake Tahoe. She visits at Christmas time and is assaulted by a massive avalanche that buries one of the resorts, and its visitors. While unharmed, she is enlisted to help in a rescue by the handsome Bryce, who somehow knows that she has some paranormal abilities that would be useful. Much of the story is of their journey getting to the victim and Niki's struggle with embracing a gift that she has spent most of her life trying to deny or hide.

I thought that author Aileen Harkwood did a great job with setting a very vivid scene for this story, both with the location and the hazardous elements. The character development was deep, in that I became very invested Niki and her plight to find closure and embrace her gifts. I would love to see the characters in another story to continue their relationship. Well done.

Really enjoyed this novella! I like the way the author doled out the story in bits and pieces but somehow it all flowed smoothly into one tale. I'd like to read more. Hope there are some sequels and a prequel would be fun too!
This is a very short story but I thought that is was absolutely amazing and heart warming. This would make an awesome Christmas movie!! This is a Christmas miracle story that you don't want to miss.
This story is a gem. Drama, suspense, magic, and romance all blend into a fast-paced, thoroughly absorbing adventure. Harkwood has a gift for quick, effective world-building. The writing is excellent, the story is original and the romance is downright thrilling.
For as short as this story was, it was compelling.

I like a little paranormal in my romance. Not a fan of Vampires, shifters and things that go bump in the night, but I do like a little magic sprinkled in there, and don't even mind a ghost or two.

I felt like there was just enough back story to make me sympathize with Nina, and at the same time, Bryce was cryptic and mysterious enough that I know I would have followed him up that mountain.

I normally read fantasy, paranormal type reads and was looking for a good one with a Christmas theme. This is a novella so it's always nice to have a good short read during such a hectic season. I loved Niki's character and the strength she showed in the face of such tragedy. I can understand her reluctance to share her talent with others for the fear of them seeing her as a freak of nature but her talent served her well in this book. The book started off a little slow but only because of the telling of the back story and setting the scene of what was to happen. There is mystery involved and the ending was quite a surprise. This was a nice holiday read.
I haven't read a really good book in quite a while. This book is absolutely fantastic. It had a touch of mystery, paranormal, and love interest. From the time I started reading, I couldn't put it down. I wanted, no I needed to find out what would happen next. I really don't want to say anything about the story. I'm afraid that I would spoil it for you. But I really would like to see a sequel. Thank-you very much for your talent. You now have a true fan. Well on to another of your stories, so that I can lose myself in your world.
Sapphire Ridge as a name doesn’t invoke Christmas images, but this book takes place mainly on Christmas Eve, and was billed as a Christmas novella. Since I have been trying to read one a week during this season, it fit the bill for me.

Niki has made the trip back to the resort at Sapphire ridge this Christmas season in order to get closure. The previous Christmas, during a visit there with her fiance and best friend, Iris, the two were killed in an accident. Since they were the family of her heart, she was understandably devastated. Her only other family is a mother that no one wants to have, much less spend Christmas with. Her mother has the ability to make people do what she wants them to do, so Niki doesn’t want to be anywhere near her. Niki has her own abilities, some she isn’t even aware of-yet.

When Niki wakes up to the sound of an avalanche heading straight for the resort she’s at, she knows things are getting ready to get scary bad. As rescuers descend on the ski resort by way of helicopters, Niki walks away from the devastation as she waits for a call for her turn to help. She meets Bryce, a man that asks her to help him find someone who was buried farther up the mountain, away from the devastation of the resort, and likely not to ever be found.

This story ended up being an adventure with a twist I didn’t see coming, which is always a good thing in any book for me. Since this is a novella, I am not sharing anymore of the story. But I will say that it also is a romance.

The one problem I had with this novella was the lack of any reasons for the special abilities of Niki and her mother. Even a short back story would have been welcome. I was left wondering what they are, what else can they do, and why wasn’t her mother more of a character since she is mentioned so many times.

All in all though, it was a good adventure and romance. I enjoyed the twist, and the two main characters. I just thought a few extra pages with more explanation would have made for a better story.(RabidReads.com)
